Frequently Asked Questions

How are our groups different?

With the joint efforts of Speech-Language Pathology & Occupational Therapy, these groups work towards bringing together like-minded individuals to build connections in ways that respect one’s authentic self. Our groups do not force social expectations nor promote masking and are therefore a safe space for neurodivergent individuals to connect and celebrate their true self.

Why our groups are different.

As neurodiversity affirming therapists, we respect the authentic social communication of all people. For many years, social skills have been a primary therapy focus for autistic children and teens, and are based on the premise that neurodivergent social skills are disordered or wrong. The autistic community has expressed discomfort with many current social- therapy practices, particularly those that work to imitate neurotypical communication and mask autistic behaviours and feelings. By placing our emphasis on connection, perspective taking, and self-advocacy, we can empower students to engage in rewarding social interactions while remaining their authentic self.
